THE HARD FOUGHT FAITH PODCAST 9
Nevertheless, Your will be done.
Just a teenager, Caleb faced a terrifying reality: the leg pain that wouldn’t go away was cancer.
Passionate about roping cattle, Caleb’s doctor warned that he would likely never get to do the thing he loved anymore.
It was a season of unknowns:
Back room talks of whether chemo was even worth trying due to the side effects—and whether making him comfortable was the better choice.
A possible leg amputation.
The incredibly scary possibility that the cancer could return within two years—and it would likely be really aggressive if it did.
It threw Caleb into a season of trust and faith.
“I had a couple moments to begin with where my prayer was that there would be no cancer in the scan and then kind of excited going to the scan, and then you’re sitting there, and they’re like, yeah, it’s definitely cancer.”
God didn’t answer his prayer that there would be no cancer, so Caleb dug deeper. After reading Scripture, his prayers changed.
“But the next part was the part I was missing, and it was: Nevertheless, Your will be done.”
He started asking God for comfort. For His help to make the most of this impossible situation.
Life settled, and things fell into place. The important 2-year scans were clean. Life was moving forward and good.
Until the cancer returned.
“I kind of had some denial.”
And he started praying it wouldn’t be cancer again.
“This is going to ruin my job, this life we built, all this stuff.”
Then his old writings from the last season reminded him who God was and what his prayers needed to be.
The hard didn’t end: Caleb ultimately discontinued chemo due to the side effects. Cancer scans continue to be a part of his life. Trials still come.
“It’s kind of unnerving not to know what’s next, but it feels like also a blessing that no matter what’s next, God’s going to be involved.”
And his heart? “I want to show people the God I was able to experience throughout all these trials.”
Have you faced hard? Found the Lord and even peace as the trial ended… only to face the same thing—or something worse—again? Have you wrestled with whether you can trust when the hard doesn’t seem to go away—and when it even looms ahead as a real possibility in your life?
Listen to this incredible story of faith with roots that took hold in the heart of a teenager facing an impossible truth—and continues today, even as his future is unknown. Find encouragement, hope, and the God who was with Caleb then and now: Even Facing the Unknown.
